SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
The Bob Goldstein Scholarship and the Dr. Arthur F. North, Jr. Scholarship
Since 1993, the Somerset Hills Kennel Club has offered annual Scholarships to residents of New Jersey who are enrolled in the study of Veterinary Medicine. The club’s goal is to award recipients who display the same commitment to canines and community as did the people for whom the Scholarships are named, Bob Goldstein and Dr. Arthur North. This scholarship program allows the Club to contribute to the education of future New Jersey veterinarians, and to raise awareness of the influential role that the dog show community plays in the advancement of canine health.

We invite all college administrators and prospective applicants to enjoy the following pieces written about Bob and Arthur:
Honoring Bob Goldstein:
Bob Goldstein was a special person, thus it is only fitting that he be remembered through the scholarship named for him and offered to other special people. Along with his wife, Joan, Bob was breeder of the "Gold Dust" Whippets and Greyhounds; dogs of their breeding are prominent in the pedigrees of many of today's winners. Bob was a member of Somerset Hills Kennel Club from 1980 until his death in 1993. He served many years on the Board of Directors and also as Vice-President. However, his primary role was behind the scenes as our Grounds Chairman. His expertise and attention to detail made the Somerset Hills show one of the truly great shows. Bob is best remembered as our Good Will Ambassador, riding around the grounds on a golf cart, with a ready smile and a "Hi-ya" for all he encountered. He had a gift for making the newcomer feel welcome, and a stranger was never a stranger for long. Those of us who were privileged to know him had our lives enriched by his presence, and we will never forget him. Thanks, Bob, for everything.
Remembering Dr. Arthur F North Jr
A Recipient of the Somerset Hills Kennel Club's ARTHUR F NORTH VETERINARY SCHOLARSHIP asked, "Who was Arthur North?"
Simply one could say, "Dr. North was a well respected, knowledgeable and dedicated veterinarian, a credit to his profession and his community, long to be remembered as a caring man of high integrity with a good sense of humor."
But, indeed, he was much more - a man who loved life and liked to enjoy it. His devotion and his kindness to new as well as old friends will be long remembered. He always had time for people in need of encouragement and help, an animal in distress or with an enigmatic disease, other veterinarian's diagnostic problems, and lecturing at innumerable seminars and dog clubs and service to the community in which he lived.
An Honor Graduate of Cornell University, New York State Veterinary College, Class of 1935, Dr. North continued all his life to be involved in alumni affairs. He was a contributing Founder and a Research Partner of the Laboratory for Diseases of Dogs at his alma mater. During World War II, he served in the Army Veterinary Corps, where he rose to the rank of Major. He was awarded a Commendation Medal for saving two soldiers from drowning.
In 1947, he founded the Somerset Veterinary Group in Bridgewater and later instituted the first twenty-four hour emergency service long before this kind of practice became popular. In 1968, his son, Dr. John North, joined the practice and today runs the Somerset Veterinary Group. John North is always present as one of the Veterinarians at the Somerset Hills K.C. Show, succeeding his father in this voluntary service to the dog fancy.
Friendships are very special and a two way street. We are proud and honored to have walked on the same side of the street with Arthur North.
Somerset Hills Kennel Club is proud to administer their scholarship programs in conjunction with scholarships offered by Central New Jersey Hound Association, in honor of Asa Mays DVM.
