SCHOLARSHIP, 4H PARTNERSHIP, AND PUBLIC EDUCATION
SCHOLARSHIP
The Bob Goldstein Scholarship and the Dr. Arthur F. North, Jr. Scholarship
Since 1993, the Somerset Hills Kennel Club has offered annual Scholarships to residents of New Jersey who are enrolled in the study of Veterinary Medicine. This year’s winners display the same commitment to canines and community as did the people for whom the Scholarships are named, Bob Goldstein and Dr. Arthur North.
This scholarship program allows the Club to contribute to the education of future New Jersey veterinarians, and to make them aware of the influence of the dog show community to advancing canine health.

We invite all to enjoy the following pieces written about Bob and Arthur, from our club's September 11, 2021 event premium:
Honoring Bob Goldstein:
Bob Goldstein was a special person, thus it is only fitting that he be remembered through the scholarship named for him and offered to other special people. Along with his wife, Joan, Bob was breeder of the "Gold Dust" Whippets and Greyhounds; dogs of their breeding are prominent in the pedigrees of many of today's winners. Bob was a member of Somerset Hills Kennel Club from 1980 until his death in 1993. He served many years on the Board of Directors and also as Vice-President. However, his primary role was behind the scenes as our Grounds Chairman. His expertise and attention to detail made the Somerset Hills show one of the truly great shows. Bob is best remembered as our Good Will Ambassador, riding around the grounds on a golf cart, with a ready smile and a "Hi-ya" for all he encountered. He had a gift for making the newcomer feel welcome, and a stranger was never a stranger for long. Those of us who were priviledged to know him had our lives enriched by his presence, and we will never forget him. Thanks, Bob, for everything.
Remembering Dr. Aurthur F North Jr
A Recipient of the Somerset Hills Kennel Club's ARTHUR F NORTH VETERINARY SCHOLARSHIP asked, "Who was Arthur North?"
Simply one could say, "Dr. North was a well respected, knowledgeable and dedicated veterinarian, a credit to his profession and his community, long to be remembered as a caring man of high integrity with a good sense of humor."
But, indeed, he was much more - a man who loved life and liked to enjoy it. His devotion and his kindness to new as well as old friends will be long remembered. He always had time for people in need of encourangement and help, an animal in distress or with an enigmatic disease, other veterinarian's diagnostic problems, and lectruing at innumerable seminars and dog clubs and service to the community in which he lived.
An Honor Craduate of Cornell University, New York State Veterinary Colllege, Class of 1935, Dr. North continued all his life to be involved in alumni affairs. He was a contributing Founder and a Research Partner of the Laboratory for Diseases of Dogs at his alma mater. During World War II, he served in the Army Veterinary Corps, where he rose to the rank of Major. He was awarded a Commendation Medal for saving two soldiers from drowning.
In 1947, he founded the Somerset Veterinary Group in Bridgewater and later instituted the first twenty-four hour emergency service long before this kind of practice became popular. In 1968, his son, Dr. John North, joined the practice and today runs the Somerset Veterinary Group. John NOrth is always present as one o fthe Veterinarians at the Somerset HIlls K.C. Show, succeeding his father in this coluntary service to the dog fancy.
Friendships are very special and a two way street. We are proud and honored to have walked on the same side of the street with Arthur North.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND 4H PARTNERSHIP
Somerset Hills is partnering with Somerset County 4H Dog Clubs to encourage the growth of tomorrow’s dog fancy. SHKC members assist at 4H show handling and obedience training sessions. SHKC supports the NJ State 4H State Dog Show held every year at Rutgers University and Somerset and Hunterdon County 4H fairs held every August. SHKC is championing a Junior Steward Apprentice Program at the SHKC Dog Show, allowing teens to work with an experienced Ring Steward, and learn how to organize dogs and their handlers as they enter the ring, and as the judge awards the prizes.
LIBRARY PROGRAM Members of the Somerset Hills Kennel Club hold a Responsible Dog Ownership program every October at the Bernards Township Library, Basking Ridge, NJ. This annual event educates the public about how to be effective dog owners. Our members bring their dogs to meet children and their parents. We discuss all that goes into being a responsible dog owner –puppy training, feeding, grooming, exercising, vet visits, etc.. We also share the breed history of our pure bred dogs and discuss the AKC events that we participate in and are available to all dog owners. And of course we leave plenty of time for our dogs to get pets and hugs from everyone!

NURSING HOME VISITS
Members of the Somerset Hills Kennel Club also spend time making dedicated visits to local nursing homes, where residents welcome our club members and their dogs - often missing their own dogs, or reminiscing about their own cherished family pets. Members also enjoy the opportunity to share their service dogs experience, information about their breed and it's history, and of course, some of their favorite stories about their dogs!
PARADES
Somerset Hills Kennel Club Members can also be seen in Branchburg Community Fair events, and the local St. Patrick's Day Parade!
