A NOTE FROM THE SHOWCHAIR, LISA WARREN

SHKC members,

I am very late in sending my thanks to all of you who made contributions to the success of our 79th show, but that is not for any lack of appreciation for your dedication and the efforts you made.  We had very hot, humid weather plus a downpour, making everything more difficult and more tiring, but no one complained: everyone just soldiered on and got their jobs done, and did them well. Bravo!

It was an interesting show this year for a few reasons.

1) We were compelled to instigate bench-hearing proceedings on dogs that were locked in a car in that dangerous weather. The dogs were quite fortunate that, before they were in life-threatening distress, their situation was discovered and deftly dealt with by a few innovative, savvy dog people. Another ten minutes in that heat might have been deadly, according to the vet.  A light note in what could have been a grim situation: when I arrived on the scene, the mini-van’s doors had been opened. I asked the person who had opened them how he managed that without breaking a window.  His humorous reply was that he had acquired that skill in an earlier, different part of this lifetime.

2) The rain prevented us from using our ready-rings for the Groups, which was to be a first-time effort, since the canopies of those small tents were filled with water from the deluge and threatened to dump gallons on anyone standing under them.  But we still utilized the planned entrance at the Milltown Road end of the ring and the planned exits, which greatly reduced the congestion under the tent. I hope that we learned a bit this year and will be able to utilize the concept with real success next year.

3) It was our first show offering both morning and afternoon obedience trials.  It seemed to be successful and we are hoping the financials show that this turns obedience into a break-even or profitable endeavor for us.  Some of you may not realize that SHKC owns a bit of history regarding all-breed shows and obedience trials, being the longest-existing all-breed club to offer obedience at its shows.  It would be a shame to allow our tradition to die and this may be the way of preventing obedience from becoming a financial drain on the club.

 I want you to know that your efforts were recognized in “Dog News?with these words in a long article about the weekend:

 “…Somerset Hills has gained and become the pre-eminent show of the weekend entry ways for sure with many people now understandably referring to the weekend as ’the Somerset Hills Weekend.' Given the facts that the venue is really Somerset’s and that the bionic dog show man of at least the East coast (if not the nation), the incredibly diverse and talented David Helming is the common thread for all three shows and the original representative from Somerset one can appreciate and accept this new title and those accolades for Somerset.? And later in the article:  “…all on the Staff of Somerset deserve special recognition for encouraging this show to be a stand-out example of dog  showing competition.?nbsp;

That’s you, folks: the “Staff of Somerset!"   You do, indeed, deserve special recognition and I cannot adequately express my appreciation for your enthusiastic, collective spirit as a show team.  Every one who did anything at all in support of this show made a contribution to our club, and to those of you who were there on the day of the show, which may have been the hottest day of the summer: my hazardous-duty thanks to you all.

Lisa
